& South Music Giveaway

My buddy from Rockouts was able to attend this show, took some great shots, and was happy to contribute a review.... BTW, I have a signed poster and signed CD from the band (and yes, it's the new CD Your Are Here) to the first person that emails me at julio.enriquez@gmail.com .

South-Tell Me [mp3]

I normally cringe anytime I see a line-up that includes more than one opener and three opening acts on a weeknight usually require some pretty heavy mathematics and formulas as I try and decide the precise time I need to arrive in order to arrive right before the headliner. Luckily South chose to play at the Marquis Theater (which I live very close to) and I chose to arrive nice and early because for the first time in a long time I saw three solid bands at a show where I wasn’t too familiar with any.

The full line-up was as follows:

Johnny Lloyd Rollins

Ki:Theory

The Silver State

South

I had heard South before and I had a decent idea what to expect. With Wilco drawing a large percentage of the music crowd out of Denver, there wasn’t a bad spot in the house. What resulted was a very intimate show that didn’t have the energy of a packed house, but was a great experience none the same. The guys from London put on a strong set and actually ended up exceeding my expectations. South’s most recent album, “You Are Here” came stateside on April 29th and is worth a listen.

I was unaware of The Silver State prior to last week, but after the show I will be spending some time looking to hear more. They played a pretty quick set (just like all of the openers obviously since there were 3 of them) but it was very enjoyable and I imagine it won’t be too long before they are headlining their own show.

The biggest surprise of the evening came from a band from Richmond, Virginia. I walked into the Marquis with two songs left in Ki:Theory’s set and immediately liked what I heard. They were really into the show and seemed to project their energy into the room even though it was pretty empty at the time. They closed with “Kiss with Fists” and after the song had ended I walked over and bought one of their albums (which I don’t do very often). I would urge you to check these guys out, they have a style that is conducive to a lot of different audiences and I wouldn’t be surprised at all to learn that they were receiving radio play in the near future.

Royksopp

Royksopp's first album is a classic, even though Geico had all but ruined Remind Me for me. Dlake has remixed the track and has made me forget the ill feelings that have resonated in my head from too many Caveman commercials.

After seeing the Colorado Springs show, I really wish I would have heeded to my friend Montoga's word and hit up the Grand Junction show the night before. I wrote a show review for the Denver Post Reverb section and Miss 28Deep shot some brilliant photos which can all be seen and read here. I also came across a live recording of this particular show which you can download in two parts. A huge thanks goes to Tim Markham for his flawless recording of the show and you can get the lossless version of the show here.

An evening full of such promise wore extremely thin on me. The fact that there were two local bands on the bill (don't get me wrong, I am a huge proponent of local music), but the two bands that opened were misbilled and created a very short attention span amongst friends. Thankfully, Film School handled their business. I contributed some photos to the Denver Post Reverb Section which you can check here.

The Young Knives

Here's an interview that I conducted with the always funny and very talented UK band, The Young Knives. Their album Superabundance was released last month (you can purchase here) via Rykodisc.

The Young Knives-Up All Night [mp3]

Interview Time
C=T Why do you use "House of Lords" as an alias and what is the meaning behind the name choice?

YK The idea behind it was that I always veto everyone elses ideas, just like the house of lords does to the house of commons in the british parliamentary system. It’s a bit of a high brow nick name and not really very street but that’s how the young knives roll. Deeply and religiously uncool.

C=T Name some great music aliases ...

YK Captain Beefheart, Adam Ant, David Bowie, Bono, The Edge, Sting, Maddonna, Elvis Costello, Garry Numan, Billy Idol… Is that enough? Why would anyone use their real name when you can have a superhero name?

C=T There's a track on your "Rollerskater" EP that's mostly interview, where bassist House of Lords expressed that he'd like to tour with Stephen Malkmus and the Jick, please elaborate.

YK At the time when we made that Album (2002) The first Malkmus solo album had just been released and we all went to Sheperds Bush Empire to watch them play. It was a really awesome gig so it stuck in my mind. That’s why when we did this interview I thought of them. However, Malkmus has brought out another 3 albums since and all have them have been a bit shit. I would still like to meet him and hang out and get drunk and stuff. Pavement were awesome but I don’t think I would like to have to listen to his more rubbish songs every night.

C=T It is common knowledge that your B-sides are equally as good as proper full lengths. Why the neglected treatment and not give the B-sides a proper release?

YK - Because we have to make b-sides so some songs have to be a-sides and others have to be B-sides. We like to think that our b-sides are still good songs and not actually worse that our album tracks just maybe a bit different. Having said that we have done a couple of really bad B-sides. Maybe after our 5th album we will release a B-sides and rarities album. Maybe not.

C=T Your sound has progressively become darker, why the shift in mood?

YK-We are getting older and progressively more cynical.

C=T Why did "Tailors" never become a proper single?

YK-I don’t think it would have worked as a single, that’s not to say it isn’t a good song it’s just not right for releasing as a single. It’s probably too downbeat.

The Blakes

The Blakes will be opening up for the Teenagers on their UK jaunt and will be returning to the US, but until than, we have some remix work from Mr. David Wrangler.

::: 05.10.08

My friend Castro was able to go in my place to cover this show, and it looks like he danced his ass off.

For a band who was not even featured as the headliner Does It Offend You? Yeah sure made like the nights main event with their rock/electro unique sound. They played a short energetic set that had the crowd dancing to every beat. To be honest seemed like everybody left as they finished their set. A good concert is always considered a success by the randomness of a cover song that comes out of nowhere, in this case, it was a cover of Devo's "Whip It". Yes I did just say "Whip It". All in all a decent size crowd gathered to see this UK band who will be opening for Bloc Party as well as Nine Inch Nails later this Summer. After performing a set at Coachella it seems all but guaranteed that big things are about to happen to this group of scud electro- rockers.

Coldplay Tour

This is coming to every major city in the US, almost....

Coldplay-Violet Hill [mp3]

COLDPLAY ANNOUNCE "VIVA LA VIDA"

NORTH AMERICAN TOUR WITH UK/EUROPEAN DATES TO BE ANNOUNCED SOON

Details Released For Free Madison Square Garden
& Brixton Academy Show Tickets On Coldplay.com

Coldplay
announce their "Viva La Vida" North American Tour in support of their new album of the same name, which will be released on June 17th. The US tour will kick off on June 29th in Philadelphia, PA. Ticket information is available at http://www.coldplay.com. British/European dates will be announced shortly.

Before kicking off the "Viva La Vida" tour, Coldplay will play free concerts in London (June 16th at Brixton Academy) and New York (June 23rd at Madison Square Garden). Information on how to win tickets to these shows will be available at http://www.coldplay.com beginning today. The contest will run from May 9th through to June 1st. Winners will receive notification on June 5th.

Viva La Vida, Coldplay's forthcoming album, will be released by Parlophone on June 12th. Produced by Brian Eno and Markus Dravs, the record is the follow-up to 2005's X&Y, which debuted at #1 in 32 countries and has sold 10 million copies worldwide to date.

The album's lead single "Violet Hill" was downloaded by two million people during the recent one-week period in which the band made the song available to fans for free. It is now for sale at all digital retailers.

Coldplay will perform "Violet Hill" on the Today Show on NBC on Friday, June 27th. US fans are encouraged to check out the performance in person. Viewing is on a first-come, first-served basis outside the show's Window on the World Studio, located at 49th Street and Rockefeller Plaza in New York City. The band will also perform on Comedy Central's "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" on June 26th.

"[Lead singer Chris] Martin broods over a lost lover with a snarling acidity that makes him sound more human than ever - miles away from the dreamy romantic he was on soaring ballads like 'Speed of Sound,'" said Rolling Stone, naming "Violet Hill" a must-have in a recent "Downloads" column. "Jonny Buckland rips jagged, bluesy riffs that match Martin's mood while drummer Will Champion and bassist Guy Berryman maintain a stalking beat...primal rock & roll."

Upcoming US tour dates are as follows:

This was only my second time at the fabulous sounding Walnut Room. The venue is one of the cleanest, intimate, and best sounding joints in town. Portishead

XLR8R has a great interview with Portishead. I just got the album and I don't know why I tried to resist. Third is out and you can purchase it here.

I just got the new issue of Paste (yes, I still read music publications) and the thing I look forward to most is the CD that comes in the middle. I saw this live session and I had to listen to it immediately. I'm kind of bummed that I didn't catch Caws and Co. for SXSW, but I guess this will have to suffice.

*** Kate Nash
*** Fox Theater
*** 05.05.08

My friend Castro was able to hit up the Kate Nash show from last night. Here's what he had to say:

I ended up covering the Kate Nash NME Tour last night in Boulder, Colorado. I was eager to see her with a full backing band this time as opposed to the acoustic set she performed at the Cedar Street Courtyard during SXSW.
I don't think the venue sold out, nonetheless, Kate managed to wow the crowd with her unique and soothing voice. She seemed somewhat nervous and giddy as she spoke in between songs, but as soon as she hit the first note of the song, she seemed like a seasoned veteran up on the stage. All in all she seemed to win over quite a few fans with her no holds barred lyrics that she brought to the table. At times it seemed like the whole crowd knew every chorus to every song, not bad considering she is trying to break into the American scene. Welcome to America Kate, hope you enjoy your stay.

We Are Scientists

Just a reminder, the new album from We Are Scientists, Brain Trust Mastery, will be released next week (the 13th and you can purchase it here). And as of right now, like, if the year were to end in May, the album would fall into my top 6 albums of the year. Yeah, that's pretty solid stuff.

Broken Social Scene Presents:
Brendan Canning

Anything from A&C's deserves and demands immediate attention. I can't wait to hear the upcoming tour announcements. Thanks for the heads up P4k!

From Arts and Crafts-

Release Date: July 22, 2008
On July 22, Brendan Canning will release his first solo effort as the next release in the Broken Social Scene Presents series. Canning is a prolific songwriter and founding member of the indie rock collective. He's a veteran performer on the Canadian music scene - formerly a member of such notable bands as By Divine Right and hHead. The new album, aptly titled, Something For All Of Us..., is a truly genre-ambiguous, progressive work. Canning finds himself free to experiment with a variety of sounds - from hushed lo-fi acoustics, to blazing rock 'n roll, to psychedelic groove.
